Butterfly asked:

Upon checking our bank account today, my boyfriend discovered that we had been debited 39 dollars from a company neither of us had ever heard of. We went to the website, and the first thing the website says is, “What are these charges?” Bad sign. It claims to be a company offering ID protection (go figure), and that someone in the household authorized the charges to our checking account. When we called the number, we were told that they didn’t have a record of our name or our phone number, and the only way they could refund the money was for is to give them the account number again. Of course, we refused, and they told us to send them a bank statement with the charges and they would refund us. We printed a copy, blacked out all the information that could lead to additional charges, and faxed it to them. We haven’t received a response yet. When we looked closer at the statement, there were other charges from a different company that we’d never heard of, but when we called that company, we realized it was the same one using a different name on our statement. I sent them an email and threatened to contact a lawyer, told them I knew it was a scam. I know these people typically target individuals who are uneducated and don’t know the law, so I’m hoping that by making it very clear that I’m no fool, they will refund the money and leave us alone. The worst thing about it is that our account is in overdraft now and we simply cannot afford this. Has anyone else ever dealt with this situation? What are some other steps I could take?

The company was ID pro 99. The charges came from two different 800 numbers on the statement.

Ray

Thing is, I already have McAffee Virus Protection and when this popped up I commanded a scan and McAffee showed that it deleted a Trojan and some other things and was “done.” So why is this crap still popping up? It appeared first when I clicked on some site, not sure what it even was but it wasn’t crazy, since the worst site I go to is probably perezhilton, and it didn’t come from there. Any idea how to get rid of this issue and/or what the heck it is? Also, is my McAffee just not working, because it seems to be?

Joann

Why not mail servers/mail account providers like Yahoo, google, hotmail restructure their login pages to include virtual keyboards? .Are there any technical issues ?. If impossible, can one code write an applet or other interfaces to use them over any secure networks ?. I always use Vk while logging into bank sites and I feel that the same system might be of huge help in prevent identity hijack for other services.
TempoOne, I believe that keyloggers using screen shot cant do a thing if one uses shuffle option.
Third answer is much appreciated. But I still don’t see why yahoo login page cant have a V-K . Have yahoo admins exlicitly discussed anything about this ?

Ruth

Do you think it is wise to get the police involved? The credit card company says too, but many people say to let them handle it.
