Question by : Where do merchants to report credit card fraud?
We made a charge back to the victm and sent an email to fraud guy, and im not sure what can i do for next step. Cops dont care about credit card fraud especially for a small amount like 550 dollars. The cost of posecution will be far more than just ignore it. So what can i do for it? Credit card company? Do they really refund me all charges? or do they really persue the case like this? we are just small business, 500 is a lot mean for us.

Best answer:

Answer by Brother Otter
Unfortunately, you don’t have many options that’ll get results without spending more money than you’ve lost. One option might be Small Claims Court. Check about filing fees in your area. All the credit card company will do is handle the refund to the mischarged person. They won’t likely pursue the fraudster in this chase for what, to them, is a small amount. You may be able to file the charge on your business insurance as a theft. And you may be able to report it on your taxes as a theft or bad debt; check with your accountant.

Three ID Theft Protection Programs Reviewed

Article by Glyn Norman

In the marketplace for ID Theft Protection, three companies are taking the lead. Invisus Direct, Wells Fargo and PrePaid Legal/Kroll, Inc. On the surface, all three companies seem to offer an almost identical product, but beneath the surface, significant differences emerge.

Invisus Direct primarily offers protection against online ID theft, through securing your computer with software which protects you from such predators, and insures you against ID Theft even if it happens in the offline world. If you already have strong PC protection from another software vendor, like McAfee or Norton, or you own a Mac, you may not need the protection that Invisus offers for around .99 per month, per computer.

Wells Fargo offers ID Theft protection, with ,000 in ID Theft insurance to cover the costs of restoring your identity if it is stolen. Like Invisus, the usual suspects are monitored, such as your credit reports etc.

PrePaid Legal/Kroll, Inc. offers ID Theft protection that monitors your credit report, the use of your Drivers’ License #, your medical records, and your Social Security #. The subscription costs .95 per month, but here is where PrePaid Legal/Kroll, Inc., differs from the other two programs.

With Invisus and Wells Fargo, if your identity is stolen, they provide you with a do-it-yourself pack, which contains form letters that you have to send to every financial organization with whom you have dealings, explaining the theft and attempting to remedy the situation. On average, the amount of time this takes is 600 hours. PrePaid Legal/Kroll have a different solution. You sign over a Limited Power of Attorney to them, and THEY spend the 600 hours sorting out the mess.

From my perspective, this tips the balance in favor of PrePaid Legal/Kroll, Inc., though if computer security is your primary concern, you might also consider Invisus.

What Can You Do to Protect Yourself? Explains the steps you can take to protect yourself from identity theft. Identity theft is a serious crime. It occurs when your personal information is stolen and used without your knowledge to commit fraud or other crimes. Identity theft can cost you time and money. It can destroy your credit and ruin your good name. Deter identity thieves by safeguarding your information. ■ Shred financial documents and paperwork with personal information before you discard them. ■ Protect your Social Security number. Don’t carry your Social Security card in your wallet or write your Social Security number on a check. Give it out only if absolutely necessary or ask to use another identifier. ■ Don’t give out personal information on the phone, through the mail, or over the Internet unless you know who you are dealing with. ■ Never click on links sent in unsolicited emails; instead, type in a web address you know. Use firewalls, anti-spyware, and anti-virus software to protect your home computer; keep them up-to-date. Visit OnGuardOnline.gov for more information. ■ Don’t use an obvious password like your birth date, your mother’s maiden name, or the last four digits of your Social Security number. ■ Keep your personal information in a secure place at home, especially if you have roommates, employ outside help, or are having work done in your house. Defend against ID theft as soon as you suspect it. ■ Place a “Fraud Alert” on your credit reports …

Miami, FL (PRWEB) April 11, 2012

In this increasingly complex, computer-savvy world, many seniors need help protecting themselves and safeguarding their interests, both on-line and in the community. They must learn how to avoid fraud, identity theft and abuse and how to cope with the often bewildering requirements of health insurers and Medicare. Helping seniors stay safe is the focus of Plaza Health Network’s Health Care Café on Monday, April 16th.

“Older people are often seen as vulnerable,” says Dr. William Zubkoff, president and CEO, Plaza Health Network. “They are all too often targeted by society’s predators. Fortunately, seniors tin learn strategies to protect themselves and avoid becoming victims. At the Health Care Café, our experts will discuss ways seniors tin cut risk and keep themselves and their families from harm.”

At the upcoming Plaza Health Care Café, seniors will get expert advice on senior safety from Frederic A. Kerstein, Esq., Assistant State Attorney, Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office and Sandra Colon Ferrer, Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) Outreach Consultant. The two speakers will review effective ways for seniors to protect themselves from abuse and exploitation. They will give straightforward advice about avoiding telephone and computer scams, staying safe in their home, and even dealing with the complexities of Medicare and Medicare fraud.

“Staying safe can be especially challenging for seniors,” says Ilene Zweig, Vice President Development & Communications, Hebrew Homes Foundation and event organizer. “Our Health Care Café will give seniors the opportunity to hear experts discuss ways to protect themselves, get answers to their questions and share their concerns and experiences with their peers.”

The April 16 Health Care Café is the latest in a series of educational events presented by Plaza Health Network as a service to the senior members of the community. “Older citizens have unique and important safety concerns,” says Dr. Zubkoff. “They need answers, but reliable information is not always easy to come by. We’re here to fill that gap, and help seniors in our community find safe, healthy solutions which will work for them.”

The Plaza Health Care Café on senior safety is open to all. Admission is free. The Café kicks off at 12:30 p.m, Monday, April16at Michael Ann Russell Jewish Community Center, Sanford L. Ziff Campus, 18900 NE 25th Avenue, North Miami Beach. Anyone wishing to attend is asked to RSVP to Ilene Zweig at 305-917-0406 or by email izweig(at)hebrewhomes(dot)org.

Protect Yourself from Credit Card fraud

Article by AlterSage

In 2008, R420-million worth of credit card fraud was committed in South Africa. That is R35-million per month squandered by clever criminals who have entire syndicates dedicated to making money illegally. Don’t fool yourself into thinking these syndicates are unintelligent – they are trained and dedicated thieves.

How is credit card fraud committed?

There are lots of ways to steal money from a credit card.

A perpetrator can steal a credit card that is not theirs and shop, swipe and sign with no trouble.
When credit cards are sent through the post, the letter containing the card can be intercepted and stolen, although most financial institutions and banks insist that cardholders collect the card personally from a branch to combat this.
Card skimming has become a serious problem in South Africa. Small devices are used to swipe credit cards and read the information that is stored on the black magnetic strip along the back of the card when the owner of the card is not looking. This allows fraudsters to make a ‘copy’ of the card quickly.
The internet is where the majority of serious credit card fraud happens. Not only can stolen credit card numbers be used to purchase goods online, there are internet scams which use bogus web pages that look identical to internet banking log-in pages. These fake sites then record the credit card details that are typed in. This can be done through ‘pharming’ (when visitors to a website are redirected to a fake site), domain hi-jacking (when a fraudster registers a web address with an almost identical name to a popular website, barring a common typing mistake) and phishing (using a fake email or fax from a bank or financial institution asking for confirmation of internet banking access details like PIN numbers and passwords).

Common targets for credit card fraud

Unfortunately, credit card fraud can happen to anyone. However, careless cardholders are usually the victims. Those that leave their cards lying around, let waiters in restaurants leave with their cards to go and swipe it, let friends and family use them to shop online, and don’t check the amount charged to them when they sign for a purchase are going feel the sting of credit card fraud sooner or later.

How to protect yourself from credit card fraud

Staying informed about credit card fraud and what to look out for as an admonitory of illegal activity is the best protection.
Never let your card out of your sight. Don’t let anyone else use the tease or give out card information to anyone. Also ensure that you assume’t make card payments on unsecure websites (Look for the ‘s’ in the ‘https://’ at the beginning of the url to make sure the place is secure, as well as the padlock that appears after the url or in the bottom right hand corner of the page).

The crippling effect of credit card fraud has forced banks and financial institutions to wisen-up. Credit cards are now being issued with a ‘chip and PIN’ which stores private information and cannot be used without a PIN selected by the cardholder.

A card protection plan is a sensible idea. For a small fee every month, a credit card tinned be protected from card fraud and if the cardholder does experience fraud, the protection mean will cover the repayment costs.

What to do if you are the target of credit card fraud

If you discover that money has been spent on your card which you can’t account for, contact your bank at once and ask for assistance. If your card is missing, cancel it with the relevant banking institution immediately. If the transactions on the card can be proved to be fraudulent, normally the bank will repay the money.

Credit card security is a matter of staying alert and informed as well as adopting sensible and secure behaviour. It can be easy for a personal credit card to fall into the wrong hands, yet this doesn’t have to be the case if cardholders are conscientious and aware.
