Can other players gain vital information (such as passwords) through World of Warcraft?

korinkoj1 asked:

Recently, my family was victim of ID theft through PayPal. We had over $8000 stolen. I’m an avid World of Warcraft player, and my dad thinks that our passwords may have been stolen somehow through World of Warcraft. I was told that the ports that WoW used couldn’t allow that kind of info to be passed through, but I need solid factual information.

I really need some help convincing my dad with TECH and FACT information.

Unless you downloaded something for World of Warcraft such as a hack tool or addon with a virus, then no. They can however track some stuff but not passwords and such. You probably got a keylogger or something from downloading a program you shouldn’t have.

You were told correctly then. As stated above, Unless you have download a tool used to Hack, that could contain Malware, then World of Warcraft could not gain vital Information.

If you do contain proof that World of Warcraft was responsible for stealing this large amount of money, then you do have the option to create a Law Suite Against Blizzard Entertainment for Identity Theft.

But, Blizzard Entertainment would not do this.

If you need some solid evidence, then have your parents contact Blizzard Entertainment via the Phone. Blizzard Tech’s will say the samething, and explain How the World of Warcraft Clients work and all that type of information.

Plus, if you do have an AntiVirus, AntiSpyware and/or Firewall, you would know that World of Warcraft would be Monitering your computer.

Based on your vast description, I would highly reccomend doing Anti-Viral Scans, Anti-Spyware Scans & such. I would also moniter what you download from now on.

The chances are, you may have gotten a piece of Malware such as a KeyLogger or Trojan.

I’d also advise you to change all your passwords on a different PC, and if possible any Credit Card Info stored on that computer. Unless it is clear that you do not have any Malware…..Because, Chances are you do.

as long as you use the blizzard launcher to start up the game before you log in… and as long as you haven’t downloaded any mods, UI’s, or add-ons… there’s no way someone could get to your family’s information through WoW.

The only thing that can be stolen from you is if key loggers are able to access your account and take your username and password.

They can go to the website and enter in your account and see everything that is listed there… but that is it.
